Training videos that stop and ask

Watching a video is passive, and nobody can prove it happened. Add questions to yours and the film pauses until each person answers — with every answer in your reports. Press play on this one; it will stop on you.

4 stops in this film · 0 answered

One of our own films, about how Smart Hosting marks questions. It stops four times to mark you. Press play — it will stop on you after about twelve seconds.

What a stop can be

A stop pauses the film at a point you choose and asks for something. Four kinds, mixed however the film needs them.

  • A question, marked

Multiple choice, several answers or true and false, marked the moment they answer, with the reason why underneath.

  • A poll

Ask what they think rather than what they know. Recorded, never marked — useful for the questions with no right answer.

  • An acknowledgement

One button: they confirm they have understood before the film carries on. The moment a policy is agreed to, timestamped.

  • A note to read

Something on screen at the point it matters — a rule, a reminder, a link — without cutting it into the film.

Why it changes what a video is worth

  • Watching becomes something you can evidence

Mark a question as required and the scrubber will not go past it. A completion stops meaning “the tab was open” and starts meaning “they answered”.

  • You find out which bit nobody understood

Every answer is in your reports, per person and per question. A question two thirds of people get wrong tells you exactly which forty seconds of the film needs re-cutting.

  • It works on the videos you already have

A stop is a note against a point in time, not part of the file. Any film we have made you can become interactive without being re-made, re-rendered or re-uploaded.

  • Attention holds, because something is coming

People watch a film differently when they know it is going to ask. The effect starts before the first question does.

What it costs

An add-on to your plan, not a price per video — so once it is on, you can put questions in as many of your films as you like for the same money.

  • Business£60 a month, on top of the plan
  • Scale£100 a month, on top of the plan
  • Multi-site£60 a month, on top of the plan
  • Group£100 a month, on top of the plan

Ten months a year if you pay annually, and you can switch it off whenever you like. Not sure which plan you are? The plans are here.

Questions

Do our videos have to be re-made to add questions?

No. A stop is a note against a point in time, so it is added to a film that already exists — no re-render, no re-upload and no new file for anyone to keep track of. Films we delivered years ago can become interactive this afternoon.

Who writes the questions?

We do, from the script, and you approve them before anyone sees them. You can edit them yourself afterwards, add your own, or move where they land in the film — the same as everything else in your courses.

Can people skip past the questions?

Not if you mark a question as required: the scrubber is held at it until it has been answered. Questions you leave optional can be skipped, which is the right setting for a poll or a note.

Where do the answers go?

Into your reports, alongside quiz results and completions — per person, per question, and how many got each one right first time. You can export the lot as a CSV.

Does it work on phones?

Yes. It is the same player your learners already use, on any phone, tablet or computer, and the questions are built for a thumb.

What does it cost?

It is an add-on to a plan rather than a price per video, so you can put questions in as many films as you like for the same money. It is £60 a month on Business and Multi-site and £100 a month on Scale and Group, ten months a year if you pay annually, and you can switch it off at any time.
