How to use social media to promote your business online

We all want to find more customers. Whether you’re just starting out in business or you have been running your company for years, using the internet to market your business is a sensible move - after all, the average Briton spends an eye-watering £4,600 online every year.

One of the best digital marketing techniques for promoting your business online is social media, and sites like Twitter, Facebook, Instagram and LinkedIn. Today, we’re going to show you a few of the ways that you can use social media to promote your business and find new customers.

Interact with your audience

Social media is all about getting involved and sparking conversations, but if you're just asking questions and ignoring your followers, they're never going to want to interact with your brand on the internet. Having a strong presence, interacting with your followers and having genuine conversations is one of the best ways to promote your business because it not only improves your relationship with the people you're talking to, but it makes your posts more likely to be seen by other people. And how knows, maybe those people would be interested in buying from you?

One way that you can interact with your audience is by asking questions, tweeting along during major cultural events like TV show finales and football matches, and joining Twitter hours, where people from the same niche get together to talk about everything industry-related.

It might take up more of your time to actively reach out to your audience, respond to comments and spark discussions and debates, but when you do it, the results will speak for themselves.

Post promotional content

When you're deciding on what to post on social media, it can be tough to get the right balance been fun and relevant content, and promotional material. If you only post about your business and your products, people will be turned off and may even choose to unfollow you, but if you don't post about them at all, nobody will know what you're selling.

Find the right balance between generic content and promotional content. We typically find that an 80:20 ratio works best; so for every four tweets linking to blog posts, asking questions or sharing memes and GIFs, throw in one that promotes your products and services directly.

And don't just leave it at that - think about the way you present your promotional content. Create your own graphics and videos to promote your content, as they have a higher engagement rate.

Organise a competition

The chances are that you've seen a competition or two during your time on social media, but you probably didn't know just how valuable running a social media competition could be for your business.

By offering to give away a product or service in exchange for likes and followers, you can grow your social media audience overnight and promote your products to thousands of people.

Just think - every single person who enters your competition has to share your link and an image of your product with their friends, and that can quickly generate hundreds of sales.

There are different rules and best practices when running a competition online; Instagram is usually the trickiest, as it's harder for people to share your posts with their friends.

Stick to Twitter and Facebook, create a graphic of the product you're going to be giving away, and remember to include all of the relevant hashtags, like #giveaway #freebie and #competition. As your followers start to interact with your post, their friends will see and want to be part of the action, too, and the cycle continues.

Just remember to give away a product that people would genuinely want, and to chase up your new followers with discount codes and welcome DMs.

Use videos for better engagement

Another fantastic way to promote your business on social media and generate more sales is to use video. We all know that video marketing is on the rise and that by 2021, 80% of all internet traffic will be from the video, so there's no excuse not to jump on the bandwagon and start promoting your business with multimedia content.

You could hire a video company (like Squideo ;)) to create a custom advert or business introduction, or create your own piece-to-camera videos where you show off your new products or talk about your services and offer some free advice.

As well as posting your videos to YouTube, cut them down and share snippets on Facebook and Twitter. Research suggests that the average video posted to Facebook gets 135% more likes, shares and comments than an image posted to the platform, so it pays to put in the effort.

Wrapping up

If you're not the world's biggest fan of social media, then using the platforms to promote your business can be hard work. But the truth is that social media is one of the simplest methods of promoting your business online, and you can find hundreds of new customers if you post the right content and look in the right places.

Best of luck with your strategy - you can do it!
